On Tuesday, the SEC spring meetings in Destin, Florida, commenced with the future of football scheduling among the conference's primary topics.

The formal arrival of Texas and Oklahoma is still three years away, at most, but a scheduling format to accommodate a 16-team league is a faster-ticking clock. At the center of the debate is a pair of models that have bubbled to the surface for SEC athletics directors: the 3-6 model, which would give each school three permanent opponents and six rotators under a new nine-game league schedule, or a 1-7 model that would provide for just one permanent opponent while sticking with the current eight-game format.

The agenda for the day should look like this:

8 a.m. - Open discussion.

8:05 a.m. - Bang the gavel for the 3-6 model.

8:30 a.m. - Tee time.

Really, why is this even a debate? Under 1-7 model, the annual rivalries that would be destroyed would almost certainly include Alabama-LSU, Georgia-Auburn, Alabama-Tennessee, and Florida-Tennessee, among others. Preserving just the Iron Bowl and the Florida-Georgia games alone, under the 1-7 model, would do that much damage. Want to keep the Texas-Oklahoma game intact when those two join the party in 2025? Forget about Texas-Texas A&M, then. Under a 1-7 model, every rivalry preserved spells the end for others. Simple math.

Here's more simple math: the conference expanded with Texas and OU to strengthen its brand, its revenues and its position as college football's most competitive league. That necessarily means putting on the field, as often as possible, the matchups that make it the darling TV partner it is.

In that sense, the 1-7 model undercuts the very point of SEC expansion.

Which athletics director is going to stand on the table this week and stump for that? Maybe one whose school doesn't have more than one league game worthy of annual status. Maybe one who would prefer the easier path to bowl eligibility that an eight-game SEC schedule provides. But what is more valuable to the league as a whole? The preservation of Georgia-Auburn, Alabama-LSU and the renewal of Texas-Texas A&M, or helping South Carolina punch a ticket to the Duke's Mayo Bowl? Does the league want to hitch its wagon to more must-watch regular-season TV that networks consider prime inventory, or the declining appeal of non-playoff bowl games?

As for the argument that a 1-7 model makes for an easier road to the College Football Playoff, perhaps for the year 2025 it would. That's the year the SEC's new scheduling format is set to debut, and also the last year the CFP is contracted to have a four-team field. Beyond that? Playoff expansion likely lies ahead, which will render more accommodation for tough schedules. Once that era comes, two-loss playoff qualifiers will regularly come with it.

School-specific arguments for the 1-7 model are short-sighted at best. Nobody can fault each school for voting its own interests, but money is in the best interest of every school in the league, too. When the league distributes rising annual revenues –  $54.6 million per school as of February – the Vanderbilts and Mississippi States of the league get a piece of Alabama-LSU, Georgia-Auburn, and Florida-Tennessee. And a future piece of Texas-Texas A&M is theirs for the taking this week.

The money points to the 3-6 model.

What are we even talking about?
